Requirements
To work in one of the locum medical jobs you must register with the General Medical Council. You will find further details on the process at our GMC Registration page. To apply for locum work you must also obtain permission to work in the UK. If you are an EU citizen and have obtained your qualifications in one of the EU countries the process is relatively simple entailing the GMC registration only.
If however, you are from a country outside the EEA and have obtained your qualification in a country outside the EEA you will also have to pass the International English Language Testing System to test your command of the English language. The testing covers aspects such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking and is offered in General or Academic training categories.
Once the IELTS has been passed you will need to apply and complete the Professional & Linguistic Assessments Board exams known in short as the PLAB exams. The first part of the PLAB exams covers four sections:
- Diagnosis
- Investigations
- Management
- Miscellaneous
The second part of the PLAB exams will test your ability to communicate as well as your clinical skills.
Once you have completed the PLAB exams as well as the IELTS you can then apply for registration at the GMC.
