Locum Obligations

Locum doctors must comply with the Code of Practice which is outlined the Good Medical Practice booklet available from the GMC. According to the guidelines all locum doctors that have agreed to take up specific posts and have confirmed their commitment, must honour their commitment to do so. If it is not possible, a reasonable notice should be given to Fresh Medical Recruitment enabling us to make arrangements for the appointment of another medical locum.

Work hours

Locum doctors together with their employer must ensure that work doesn’t exceed the national work hour limits for contract employment and must also adhere to the rules and regulations as set out in the policy documents of their employers.

Employer guidelines

The employer will provide you with the required guidelines and you will also go through an induction phase when you will be introduced to the various medical staff, regulations, and rules of conduct at the particular medical facility. Your responsibilities will be clearly outlined ensuring that you know exactly what is expected from you.

Responsibilities

Locum doctors normally have the same responsibilities as their permanently employed colleagues that are on the same career grading level. In terms of working hours they are for instance, expected to work the minimum hours of 40 hours a week and can work up to 48 hours a week with on-call services at hospitals. Please ensure that you understand your locum obligations by consulting the booklet available from GMC and follow the guidelines as set out by the employer.

Conduct

The locum doctors should co-operate with reasonable instructions, guidance and direction, supervision, and control from the employer and agree to observe the rule and regulations of the employer and institute where employed as locum. Locum doctors must take reasonable steps to protect their own safety and that of patients as well as colleagues. The locum also agrees not to participate in any actions detrimental to the employer’s interests and not to indulge to any entity or person confidential information about the employer, its employees, business, and transactions.
